In anticipation of this summer’s little adventure aboard R.E.D.
I created a map for our intended route.
The map will appear at the end of each post at the bottom of the page
and as we go we will be adding locations and pictures.
I have already added some locations but we are open to opinions
of where to stop
and what to see along the way.
Our route will be as follows:
1.Montreal to Sorel, Quebec.
2. Then we will head down the Richelieu River to Lake Champlain.
3. From Lake Champlain we will continue on down the Hudson River to New York City.
4. After departing New York we will head back north then cut across the first part of
the Erie Canal and hook up to the Oswego Canal
to eventually reach Lake Ontario.
5. from Lake Ontario we will retrace part of our path from last summer
sailing the Thousand Islands, then back home along the Saint Lawrence Seaway.
Feel free to send messages (1happykat@gmail.com)
or add your comments at the end of this post.
If you or someone you know have travelled all or part of this route,
we would love to hear from you.
Many thanks
from the crew of
R.E.D.
I had NO IDEA you could sail all the way to New York!! That's incredible, what a journey! You are living a life I can only dream of….We don't have sailable rivers of that length in Australia. Most of the sailing is done in the ocean. I watch them every day and am intensely jealous!!!
It won't be all sailing Nagi. Will have to lower the mast for parts, but yes, there are many many sailable rivers here. If you think this trip is cool try 'googling' The Great American Loop' (our plan for 2017). Keep in touch dear freind from afar. I am amassing some really great recipes from your blog for use aboard. -)
Kathy,
A group of this did the New York trip in 2012. We travelled there and back through he Oswego and Erie Canal. Here is our blog address from that trip – http://willnjoy.blogspot.ca/2012/07/day-1-2-stayed-in-big-rideau-will-we.html
Thanks Will 'n Joy. Am now hooked up with your blog. Will make some great reading until spring thaw! Can't wait to add some of your information to our map!
I see you are planning the Great Loop for 2017. Unfortunately we are a couple of more years beyond that. We are hoping to retire in 2020 and spend the first summer exclusively in the North Channel then 2021 due the Loop with hopefully a trip over to the Bahamas.
Going to look forward to reading your blog in 2017 for the Loop
That's our hope. (from your pics I estimated you being a bit younger that we are. F retired after 39 years with Can Forces in Oct and I have been retired for a few years so we now have the time to focus on the 'dream'. This boating/sailing life is still very new to us which is why we are taking it in stages. Next year we plan on going from here (Mtl) to Halifax for more tide/current and a bit more open water experience. Great life this boating world and connection to really nice people -)
Joy gets to retire after 35 years with Parks Canada in April 2017, but I have to wait a few more years unfortunately. Hope you will look us up when travelling back up the St.Lawrence this summer, we're at Ed Huck marine.
For us it was the opposite. I retired 9 years ago and Francois had to play catch up. Ed Huck Marine has been added to our map 🙂
I'm going to send you an email, but you're crossing well inside our stomp'n grounds near Amsterdam, NY, and we would be happy to show you around based upon the things you enjoy doing.
That would be awesome Lance! Send us a message with your coordinates and we'lll keep in touch with you about our plans.
