Ah! That old Jimmy Buffet song that brings back so many memories. “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes”.
Our journey with R.E.D. has launched a whole new mind-set for us. Before boat, we were all about condo, simple living, design and renovations. Buy a condo so we could just lock the door and travel when we reached the point of retirement. We renovated room by room but then four years ago because of serendipitous events we found ourselves owners of a new sailboat and a new vehicle strong enough to tow us to places yet unknown.

Camouflaging
The renovations came to a halt – two rooms remaining to be revamped. But it was summer and we had a sailboat! My lush balcony herb and flower garden had to be sacrificed. Indoor plants were replaced with succulents. Now in our fourth season all my treasured plants have been donated to good homes and our balcony furniture remains enveloped as it was during winter months.

Rebalancing
All our efforts became focused on R.E.D. Summer was all about trips and winter became the staging ground for planning the following year’s adventures and designing modifications to make life aboard more comfortable and efficient. Our condo became François’ work shop. Kitchen. Living room. Den. Spare room. And after four years of this we’ve realized we need a place to do stuff. The ache of envy I see in him when he encounters someone with a garage or basement is palpable. I am so lucky to be with someone who is passionate about designing, fixing, creating and it’s time we fed this passion.

New Flooring
Don’t think for one minute that we have abandoned our boat focus nor have we finished with modification projects. There are many adventures left in R.E.D.’s future. But our efforts are now split and we are diving head first into finishing our condo renos because there will come a time in the not so distant future when there will be…
