Buying Guide for 2 Person Touring Kayaks
When selecting the best 2 person touring kayak, consider the following key factors to match your needs, safety, and comfort on the water:
Material and Durability
- PVC and heavy-duty laminates: Look for kayaks made of reinforced PVC or similar durable materials that resist punctures, abrasions, and UV damage for long-lasting use.
- Fabric Reinforcement: High-denier Oxford fabric covers and Tarpaulin hull bottoms add protection and durability, especially in shallow or rocky water.
Design and Stability
- Inflatable floors: Options like I-beam or drop-stitch floors increase rigidity, stability, and comfort, minimizing kayaker fatigue.
- Tracking fins and skegs: Removable fins or skegs help maintain straight-line tracking and improve maneuverability on rivers and lakes.
Weight Capacity and Size
- Ensure the kayak supports the combined weight of two adults plus gear. Capacities commonly range from 400 to over 500 lbs.
- Length around 12 to 13.5 feet strikes a balance between stability and ease of transport.
Seats and Comfort
- Adjustable, padded seats with backrests enhance comfort during longer paddling trips.
- Footrests that are adjustable or multi-position help maintain a relaxed paddling posture.
Portability and Setup
- Lightweight inflatable kayaks with included hand or high-output pumps are easy to inflate, deflate, and store in compact carry bags.
- Quick inflation valves and multi-chamber designs improve safety and ease of use.
Accessories
- Check for included paddles, pumps, repair kits, carrying bags, and safety features to ensure your kayak is ready for immediate use.
- Durability of included paddles and seat adjustments also affect overall value.
By weighing these features and priorities, you can choose a reliable tandem kayak for peaceful tours, fishing, and recreational paddling with stability and convenience.
