WINTERIZING: Making Headway

WINTERIZING: Making Headway

…Cleaning and winterizing the ‘head’ (boat toilet)
was a lot easier than I expected…
…first removed as much water in the bowl as possible…
…purchased a good quality marine antifreeze…
(one with a glycol base as the alcohol based ones will dry the lines)
…while Francois posted himself outside with a syphon tube…

…I remained inside pumping away till the blue appeared…
…looks like a giant eyeball…
…that’s it, that’s all…
WINTERIZING: Preparing the Lines

WINTERIZING: Preparing the Lines

…I am now understanding when Francois suggested
at the beginning of the season we choose black lines…
…After several months, exposed to all types of weather and water conditions,
our lovely white lines were filthy…
…So once we had removed all that could be removed,
we brought them home for a good washing…
…separate laundry sacks kept them from becoming a tangled rat’s nest…

…a touch of fabric softener,
produced almost new-looking and very soft lines…
…each labelled…
(would I be able to remember which was which next year?)
…all ready for storage…
WINTERIZING: Storage

WINTERIZING: Storage

A few years ago we moved our upcoming retirement lifestyle into a more maintenance-free existence.

Condo living was not my residence of choice. I wanted to step out my front door, touch grass, plant a garden, harvest my herbs.

It wasn’t too long though after moving into our apartment that I finally got the concept.
Being away for extended periods requires either a reliable someone to care for things
or a home where we could just lock the door and walk away carefree.

…that month in Paris
…the two months in Africa
…carefree…
And this year, after spending almost four months onboard our little chalet on the water,
I have come to appreciate our little land home even more.

The problem now though is where to store all the boat things at the end of our first season.

… the solution…
…gives the impression of security doesn’t it?…
…first load, sails and cushions…
…the elevator reminds me a military installation…
…or maybe a prison…
…as I descend to retrieve the keys that I forgot in the car…
…our little 8’x8’…
…climate controlled…
…accessible whenever we wish…
…affordable…
…ours for as long as we need it…
